CSMART Academy is dedicated to providing rigorous safety training for all Bridge and Engineering Officers, responsible for the navigation and operation of the world’s largest fleet of cruise ships belonging to the Carnival Corporation and plc Group.
The facility features bridge and engine room simulators utilizing the most innovative technology and training solutions in the maritime industry, modeled closely after technology and practices used in the airline and other industries.

The CSMART Academy’s team of highly experienced instructors has developed a curriculum that sets the industry standard for safety, sustainability and maritime training and keeps pace with advances in ship technology, fostering critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and confidence.

 

 

Technical & Environmental Instructor (40 hours per week)

The CSMART Academy consists of nautical/technical/electrical and sustainability training incorporating environmental, exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), efficiency and LNG training. Training rooms include full mission and part task simulators as well as practical electrical training laboratories. The number and range of engineering and electrical training courses will increase over the next few years.
CSMART is currently looking for a Technical & Environmental Instructor for 40 hours per week, with particular focus on practical Technical Environmental competencies.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

As the Technical Environmental Instructor, your key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Annual training and appraisal of all Environmental Officers (EO) at CSMART
  • Appraisal of ship specific EO technical environmental proficiency as part of a ship visit coaching and mentoring program
  • Appraising and identifying EO long term training needs
  • Developing new and enhancing existing environmental training courses for EO’s, Nautical and Technical Officers
  • Providing support and feedback to the company’s operating lines, compliance and policy teams
  • Keeping up-to-date with current practices, procedures, technology and regulatory environmental compliance
  • Identify and share best practices in way of environmental management and compliance including continuous improvement of policies, procedures and training

REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE 

  • Experienced Marine Engineer and Subject Matter Expert (SME) in shipboard technical and environmental operations/compliance (10+ years’ experience required)
  • Expertise in international, regional, national environmental laws and regulations that govern global cruise ship operations
  • Knowledge of pollution prevention and pollution-generating equipment in use on cruise ships. Ability to explain and demonstrate proper operation and required maintenance of this equipment
  • Knowledge relating to the effective use of management systems (Safety Management System as prescribed by the ISM Code and Environmental Management System as defined by ISO 14001)
  • Experience ensuring proper record keeping related to environmental operations
  • Expertise related to monitoring and measuring discharges and emissions from onboard equipment
  • Understanding of the requirements for responding to environmental emergencies
  • Cruise ship experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching/instructing
  • Must hold a minimum Class 2 CoC, Class 1 preferred

Nautical Instructors (Full Mission/Part Task Simulators) (40 hours per week)

As a Nautical Instructor, you are an integral part of the CSMART team, being a role model for Carnival's Corporations Captains and Deck Officers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering training
  • Developing courses/new procedures to be implemented on board ships

REQUIREMENTS

  • Preferably be or have been in the role of Staff Captain/Captain.
  • Cruise Ship experience is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching/instructing, especially in simulated environment, would be an asset

Hydrodynamics Engineer (40 hours per week)

The CSMART Port Study team (currently 6 FTE) is expanding and looking to recruit a full time Hydrodynamics Engineer with proven experience in Dynamic Mooring Analysis and Ship Hydrodynamics. This person will be primarily responsible for performing at least 20 detailed mooring studies per year for cruise berths from ports around the world. Special projects will include passing ship effects, LNG side-by-side bunkering operations etc.

DUTIES  and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform mooring analysis to support cruise ship operations
  • Acquire all the required data together with Port Study Captain
  • Assess moored ship response under environmental loading such as wind, current and waves
  • Perform passing ship-moored ship analysis (including hydrodynamic interaction)
  • Perform mooring analysis for side-by-side moored vessels (ex. during LNG bunkering operations)
  • Generate mooring line loads, bollard forces and fender compression and reactions
  • Determine number, type and location of mooring lines and mooring bollards required to accommodate high wind events or to accommodate a passing ship
  • Write report and present results to management and staff
  • Assist Port Study team in executing risk assessment studies
  • Acquire data for creating and tuning ship mathematical maneuvering models
  • Order new ship models from the simulator supplier (for bridge simulator)
  • Fine tune ship maneuvering models as needed

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in a relevant technical discipline (Naval Architecture, Civil Engineering)
  • Minimum 2 years of proven mooring analysis experience
  • Experience in using Optimoor, aNySIM, Orcaflex or similar mooring software
  • MATLAB or similar programming language experience
  • Proficient in technical report writing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Experience in using 3D panel method (AQWA, WAMIT, DIFFRAC or similar software) for calculating vessel response to first order wave effects
  • Familiarity with PIANC and OCIMF mooring related guidelines

 PERSONAL SKILLS

  • Proficient in English (written and spoken)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Good teamworker

Engineering Instructors (ERM) (40 hours per week)

CSMART is currently looking for high quality maritime professionals who want to develop their skills, to motivate and train marine professionals.

As an Engineering Instructor, you will instruct and teach ship-board personnel, as well as involved in developing best practices that can be used on board the ships. An important element of the role will also be to visit our cruise ships from time-to-time, thereby ensuring that the teachings from the classroom and simulators are actually implemented on board.

  • Typically be or have been in the role of Chief Engineer/Superintendent, First Engineering Officer or a Subject Matter Experts (SME) Management level certificate of competency
  • Cruise Ship experience is preferred
  • Experience in teaching/instructing would be an asset
  • Works well in a team

Engineering Instructor / Developer (LNG focus) (40 hours per week)

CSMART Academy uses the very latest, state-of-the-art technology and methodology.  It consists of Bridge/Engine Room Full Mission & Part Task Simulators and practical Electrical Training Laboratories. The number and range of engineering and electrical training courses will more than double over the next few years.

CSMART Academy is currently looking for high-quality maritime professionals who have particular experience with ships using LNG fuel, in order to develop training for and teach Officers working on the new LNG fueled ships due for delivery in 2018. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Engineering Instructor / Developer (LNG) working with the existing team of instructors and developers your key responsibilities/duties will include:

  • Data gathering on the new LNG fuelled ships currently being built. (Dockyard visits will be required)
  • Developing training courses for staff working on the new LNG fuelled ships.
  • Delivering training to Technical Officers and other ship-board staff as required. This will include existing training courses in addition to the primary role of LNG training
  • Performing assessments of Technical Officers and other ship-board staff.
  • Developing existing staff knowledge of LNG practices
  • Keeping up-to-date with current regulatory requirements / practices and technology.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experienced Marine Engineer with a minimum of 5-years’ on-board experience required
  • Management level Certificate of Competency (COC) -Class 1 preferred
  • Cruise Ship experience is desirable but not essential
  • Experience with LNG or LPG is desirable but not essential
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Teaching/instructing experience desirable but full training will be provided
