CSMART Academy is dedicated to providing rigorous safety training for all bridge and engineering officers, responsible for the navigation and operation of the world’s largest fleet of cruise ships belonging to Carnival Corporation.
The centerpiece of the seven-acre campus is the Center for Simulator Maritime Training Academy (CSMART Academy). This 110,000 square foot building features bridge and engine room simulators utilizing the most innovative technology and training solutions in the maritime industry, modeled closely after technology and practices used in the airline and other industries.

The CSMART Academy’s team of highly experienced instructors has developed a curriculum that sets the industry standard for safety and maritime training and keeps pace with advances in ship technology, fostering critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and confidence.

Course Administrator (40 hours per week)

As part of the Course Administration team you will be jointly responsible for running the complete administration for our courses in a timely and efficient manner. You will be responsible for you own weekly tasks as well as assisting your colleagues and picking up ad hoc assignments.

As course administrator your tasks will consist of:

  • Communicate and provide administrative support to various departments, with respect to course administration  prior to, during and after courses are completed;
  • Ensure that administrative support is delivered in accordance with the Corporation’s standard policies and procedures;
  • Support the Instructors with ad hoc requests in relation to course administration;
  • Communicate with Carnival Operating Lines and external parties involved in ensuring that the logistics are arranged prior to, during and after courses are completed;
  • Working to improve the course administration with a focus on efficiency.

 

Key Skills and Experience

  • Relevant degree in administrative support or related fields;
  • Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English (verbal and written);
  • Accurate and able to prioritise;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, (Word, Excel,);
  • Pro active, self-reliant and service oriented;
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Simulator Operator/Assistant Instructor (40 hours per week)

The Maritime Training Center uses the very latest, state-of-the-art technology and methodology.  It consists of Bridge/Engine Room Full Mission & Part Task Simulators, including dedicated Assessment Part Task Simulator & rooms.
CSMART is currently looking for quality engineering maritime professionals who want to develop their skills, to motivate and train others with the intention of potentially becoming a professional Engineering Instructor.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience within the Maritime industry as an Engineer currently functioning in the rank of a 2nd Engineer level or lower with an electrical background and experience.
  • Cruise Ship experience is preferred
  • Basic experience in Human Factors
  • Basic experience in hardware and software troubleshooting
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good analytical skills
  • Works well in multi-cultural team environments and on individual assignments
  • Fluent English both written & spoken

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creation of Data Bases
  • Writing reports
  • Actively operating the Simulators for either the Bridge or  Engine
  • Assist instructor with the creation of simulator exercises
  • Assist Instructors with the execution of simulator exercises
  • Function as Assistant Instructor for Part Task Simulator exercises
  • Possibility after a two (2) year period to become a full-time instructor

Assessor Engineering (40 hours per week)

As part of our mission to be the world’s leader in maritime simulation and training CSMART Academy has developed a unique Proficiency Training and Assessment program (PTA) with the final aim to improve safety standards. The program is divided in two components; one designed to provide officers with recurrent training and another one to assess their professional competencies.

Each officer will attend the PTA annually, following models adopted by other safety critical industries. For this very reason CSMART is currently looking for quality maritime professionals who are interested in becoming qualified Assessors for the PTA.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Assessor, you will be working as an external faculty in addition to the CSMART team, guaranteeing an independent view of the evaluations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessment of participants in adherence with CSMART standards
  • Provision of feedback to participants
  • Review of assessment performance
  • Writing reports

REQUIREMENTS

  • Typically be or have been in the role of Chief Engineer
  • Cruise Ship experience is required
  • Availability of a minimum of 10 weeks throughout the year
  • Previous experience in the role of Assessor in maritime simulator settings is preferred
  • Previous Instructor experience is beneficial

Engineering Instructor – Electrical

CSMART Academy uses the very latest, state-of-the-art technology and methodology.  It consists of Full Mission Bridge/Engine Room and Part Task Simulators plus practical Electrical Training Laboratories. The number and range of engineering and electrical training courses will more than double over the next few years.

As an Engineering Instructor, you are an integral part of the CSMART team, being a role model for Carnival's Engineering Staff.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering training to ship-board technical staff
  • Developing courses/new procedures to be implemented on board ships
  • Keeping up to date with current practices and technology
  • Ship visits to maintain/update practices onboard

REQUIREMENTS

  • Typically be or have been in the role of Senior Engineer/Superintendent, Senior Electrical Technical Officer, Electrical Technical Officer, Subject Matter Experts (SME) Electrical/Automation Engineering
  • Cruise Ship experience is preferred
  • Experience in teaching/instructing would be an asset

Engineering Instructors (Full Mission/Part Task Simulators) (40 hours per week)

As an Engineering Instructor, you will become a role model for Carnival’s Engineering Staff on board our ships. Your role will not just be to instruct and teach ship-board personnel, but you will also be involved in developing best practices that can be implemented on board the ships. An important element of the role will also be to visit our cruise ships from time-to-time, thereby ensuring that the teachings from the classroom and simulators are actually implemented onboard.

The people we are looking for are experienced engineers and successful candidates will typically be or have been in the not too distant past, Chief Engineer, Senior Electrical Technical Officer, Staff Chief Engineer, Senior First Engineer or First Engineer. They may currently work ship-side or considering returning to a ship in the near future. We expect all candidates to have at least 10+ years of sea time in order to have the credibility to teach others. Cruise ship experience is definitely preferred although those candidates who have instructed in engine room simulators are also encouraged to apply. Successful candidates are expected to have a passion to teach others and possess the right people skills. The working language at CSMART is English.

There is a great deal of flexibility with regard to the type of assignment CSMART can offer. Although there is a great preference for those who would like to relocate to Almere, either permanently or for a period of 2-3 years at a minimum, CSMART will also seriously consider other options such as commuting from/to your home country on a regular basis. About the process

Environmental Officer Instructor (40 hours per week)

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering environmental training to Environmental Officers and other ship-board staff
  • Performing environmental assessments of Environmental Officers and other ship-board staff
  • Developing & delivering courses to be implemented at CSMART and on board ships in relation to environmental procedures and requirements
  • Keeping up-to-date with current practices, technology and regulatory environmental compliance
  • Identify best practice in way of Environmental management & compliance including continuous improvement of policies, procedures and training
  • Liaising closely with Operating Line management on environmental training, competency and procedural matters
  • Regular ship visits to maintain/update/verify that best practices and procedures are being adhered to

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experienced Marine Engineer and Subject Matter Expert (SME) in shipboard environmental operations and compliance. Minimum 10-years’ experience required.
  • Expertise in international, regional, national environmental laws and regulations that govern global cruise ship operations.
  • Knowledge of pollution prevention and pollution-generating equipment in use on cruise ships. Ability to explain and demonstrate proper operation and required maintenance of this equipment.
  • Knowledge relating to the effective use of management systems (Safety Management System as prescribed by the ISM Code and Environmental Management System as defined by ISO 14001).
  • Experience ensuring proper recordkeeping related to environmental operations.
  • Expertise related to monitoring and measuring discharges and emissions from on-board equipment.
  • Understanding of the requirements for responding to environmental emergencies.
  • Cruise Ship experience is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching/instructing.
  • Must hold a minimum Class 2 CoC, Class 1 preferred.
